With warmer weather on the horizon and a number of employees suffering from cabin fever, it is the perfect time to implement a Get Active! Challenge in the office. Although one can debate the success of office wellness programs, the truth is, if implemented for the right reason - to benefit employees - the downside is pretty much non-existent.
In our case, we've decided to tackle one issue at a time, with the first of many wellness efforts aimed at moving more. We are in a field that desk work is part of the territory, and we've all had days where you get so wrapped up in what you are doing, and realize you've barely walked 2,000 steps by 3pm. This type of inactivity is concerning on many levels - and especially employee's physical and mental well-being. To promote better habits and encourage employees to take a break throughout the day, the FMG Get Active! Challenge kicks off on Monday, March 16.
As part of this challenge, employees will be placed on three-person teams and will each be given a pedometer to wear if they do not already wear a FitBit or other tracking band. In addition to tracking steps, the FMG Wellness Committee created a Google Doc that can convert fitness activities and level of exertion into steps that will count toward each team's goals. So, for the person that hates running but loves the Dailey Method or Pilates classes, their efforts will work toward their daily step goal.
With such an active and athletic staff already, we are excited to see a little healthy dose of competition throughout the office. We expect over a 70% participation rate, and all of the FMG owners and directors have already signed up to take part. Teams are competing for some nice prizes including the winning team each taking home a $250 gift card of their choice to shop for fitness wear (Lululemon, anyone?) or purchase new running shoes, sign up for classes, or upgrade to the best FitBit. Second and third place teams will also be rewarded with fitness/health inspired gifts for their hard work.
In addition to kicking off our Get Active! Challenge in March, it is also National Nutrition Month. The FMG Wellness Committee is looking for ways to introduce more healthful vending and catering options for staff to sample each week this month. We will keep you posted on the FMG Get Active! Challenge throughout and once the winners are awarded. If your company has a wellness challenge in place, we'd love to hear about it.
On your mark…. Get set…. Go!
